Turnitin is a detection software that helps instructors and students ensure the originality of academic work. To identify similarities, it scans submissions against a vast database of academic publications, websites, and previous student papers. Turnitin provides detailed reports highlighting matched content and sources, allowing instructors to assess the originality of assignments and provide feedback.

Self-Check Folder
This allows students to submit their work to Turnitin before it is graded. The Self-Check folder is intended for students to submit several draft versions of their assignments before the due date on a specific assignment. Students can change their work before submitting the final paper to the assignment folder. The draft submissions are not stored and will not be added to the Turnitin database.

Academic Integrity Policy
In alignment with Sheridan’s Academic Integrity Policy, we want to encourage students to use proper citation and documentation practices to avoid unintentional plagiarism. The Library has videos and resources to help students learn more about academic integrity. Your Faculty librarian can also assist your students with their research in the Library or conduct an in-course workshop in your classroom. Still, it is a best practice to preview and review documentation expectations for every assignment regarding research and note-taking skills, as well as in-text citations and end references. Additionally, it is a best practice to build a grading rubric that encourages and rewards originality and creativity along with proper citations rather than penalizing students.
