Enable Respondus LockDown Browser – Written Instructions

To enable the LockDown Browser in your quiz, please follow the following directions:

  • To access Respondus LockDown Browser in SLATE. Go to Assessments > Quizzes

  1. Click the LockDown Browser tab. This will take you to the LockDown Dashboard.
  2. Find the exam for which you want to add the LockDown Browser. Click the dropdown arrow next to the exam and choose Settings.
  3. The LockDown browser is not activated by default. To require it for the exam, click Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. You have the choice to Require the Browser to view feedback and results.
  4. Add a password if you prefer. 
  5. Click the Advanced Settings for a few options, and click the Explain icon or see below for further details.
  6. Once you have chosen all your options, click Save and Close.

Advanced Settings: 

  • You can allow the student to use an iPad to write their exam. The app is available on the iTunes store. Disclaimer:  We do not recommend using an iPad or Chromebook. Should you permit students to take their exams using one of these devices, please note that we will not be able to offer technical support for any issues that may arise during the exam.
  • Allow access to specific external web domains. This could include access to OER resources.
    • Note:  Please adhere to the specified instructions. For links to function correctly within the exam, they must be included both within the question and in the advanced settings.
  • Enable a calculator or the ability to print while writing the exam. 
  • Attach a document directly to the question. This will allow students to open the document in a new tab while taking the exam. Common document formats include Excel, Word, or PDF files.
    • Best Practice:  Attach documents through the “Insert Stuff” tab in the HTML editor and upload them from your computer.

Enable Respondus LockDown Browser with Monitor – Written Instructions

  1. To enable Respondus Monitor in SLATE. Go to Assessments > Quizzes
  2. Click the Lockdown Browser Tab
  3. To enable the Monitor. Click the Dropdown arrow next to the quiz name and choose Settings.
  4. Click Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. You have the choice to Require the Browser to view feedback and results.
  5. Under Proctoring choose Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam and you can start the StartUp Sequence and choose the options that best suit your exam. 

 

NOTE: 

If the student has previously downloaded the lockdown browser and they have not updated it to a newer version. They might run into issues while writing the exam. Please ensure that all students have the current lockdown browser

  • Start the Lockdown Browser, click the “I” button (Windows) or “About” button (Mac) in the lockdown browser toolbar.
  • Depending upon the edition, the student can select “Check for Update” or “Check for Newer Version” to start the update process.

New Features (as of July 2024)

  • Show Your Work: This feature allows students to upload high-resolution images of worksheets they’ve prepared during their exam.
  • Screen Recording: This feature will record the student’s screen while they are writing the exam.
  • Sensitivity setting: Respondus Monitor’s flagging system now supports three sensitivity levels: Strict, Standard, and Relaxed.
