H5P Empowers Active and Engaging Learning

Today’s learners want interactive, participatory learning experiences. H5P supports this shift by allowing instructors to create engaging, hands-on activities directly inside SLATE.

With more than 50 interactive content types, including videos, quizzes, timelines, and branching scenarios, H5P helps transform static content into experiences that support skill-building, critical thinking, and active learning.

Introducing H5P in SLATE

What Is H5P?

H5P is an interactive content tool that is now fully integrated into SLATE. It allows instructors to create engaging learning activities—such as quizzes, interactive videos, and drag-and-drop exercises—directly within their course without relying on external platforms.

H5P supports active learning and formative assessment by encouraging students to interact with content rather than passively read or watch.

What’s New: H5P Is Now Integrated into SLATE

Previously, H5P was a separate tool that instructors accessed outside of SLATE. Content was often linked or embedded, and managing grades or logins could feel disconnected from the course. The video below shows step-by-step how instructors can access and embed H5P content:

What Can You Do with H5P?

H5P allows instructors to create a wide variety of interactive learning activities directly within SLATE, including:

Knowledge checks (Multiple Choice, True/False, Fill in the Blanks)

Interactive videos with embedded questions and feedback

Drag-and-drop activities for practice and review

Flashcards for study and self-testing

Mini quizzes for formative assessment

Media-rich pages that combine text, images, video, and interaction

These activities are best used for engagement, practice, reinforcement, and feedback rather than high-stakes testing.

How H5P Works in SLATE

H5P is now imbedded directly into SLATE and allows us to either create activities that are non-graded or created activities that are graded. The grade will automatically add to gradebook without any manual process.

H5P Content Types by Instructional Purpose

H5P can design over 100 types of activities. It is beyond the scope of this manual to discuss them all. However, to help instructors select the right tool, most popular H5P content types are grouped below by teaching and learning goals. Each teaching goal is followed by the activities most suitable for achieving that specific goal:

  1. Exploration & Active Learning
    • Interactive Video
    • Image Hotspots
    • Timeline
  2. Scenario-based & Experiential Learning
    • Branching Scenario
    • Documentation Tool
  3. Knowledge Checks & Assessment
    • Quiz (Question Set)
    • Drag and Drop (Drag the Words)
    • Fill in the Blanks
  4. Review & Reinforcement
    • Flashcards
    • Course Presentation

1. Exploration & Active Learning

Encourages discovery, interaction, and deeper engagement.

Interactive Video

Enhances video-based learning by embedding such activities as multiple-choice questions, drag-and-drop interactions, summaries, links, and information overlays directly into a video. This keeps learners actively engaged rather than passively watching.  Mainly used to check and consolidate ideas explained in a video by; Embed questions, summaries, or links in videos to keep learners actively involved.
