{"id":24302,"date":"2023-08-18T09:48:14","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T13:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ltsadev.sheridanc.on.ca\/apps\/wordpress\/learning-and-technology-portal\/?p=24302"},"modified":"2025-03-26T14:52:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T14:52:40","slug":"create-a-quiz-new-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ltsa.sheridancollege.ca\/digital-learning-support-hub\/create-a-quiz-new-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Create a Quiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Creating a quiz<\/h1>\n<p>From the navbar, click <strong>Assessment&gt;<\/strong><b>Quizzes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Quiz Experience | Instructor\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CX59rZWR3YY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 data-id=\"fill-in-quiz-details\">Fill in quiz details<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have opened the\u00a0<b>New Quiz<\/b>\u00a0page, you must start by entering basic details for your quiz.<\/p>\n<p><b>To fill in quiz details<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the\u00a0<b>New Quiz<\/b>\u00a0page, enter a\u00a0<b>Name<\/b>\u00a0for the quiz.<br \/>\n<img class=\"embedImage-img importedEmbed-img img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6036482\/uploads\/6244QPGBEXPP\/figure-new-quiz-page.png\" alt=\"New Quiz page.\" \/><br \/>\nFigure: The\u00a0<b>New Quiz<\/b>\u00a0page.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li value=\"2\">For\u00a0<b>Grade Out Of<\/b>, enter the number of points for the quiz.<\/li>\n<li value=\"3\">Select whether the quiz will be in the\u00a0<b>Grade Book<\/b>\u00a0by clicking the dropdown menu.<\/li>\n<li value=\"4\">Enter the\u00a0<b>Due Date<\/b>\u00a0for your quiz.<\/li>\n<li value=\"5\">Enter a\u00a0<b>Description<\/b>\u00a0for your quiz.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now you can add quiz questions to your quiz.<\/p>\n<h2 data-id=\"understand-date-restrictions\">Understand date restrictions<\/h2>\n<p>Quiz restrictions allow instructors to set start dates, due dates, and end dates on their quizzes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start date &#8211; determines when a quiz becomes available to learners<\/li>\n<li>End date &#8211; determines when a quiz becomes unavailable to learners<\/li>\n<li>Due date &#8211; specifies a time when a quiz is expected to be completed. A quiz is considered late if it is submitted after the due date is reached.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a quiz has an enforced time limit and the learner uses more than the allotted time, the quiz is marked as <b>exceeded time limit<\/b>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-id=\"set-up-availability-dates-conditions\">Set up Availability Dates &amp; Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>Set a time frame for when the quiz is available and create conditions for accessing the quiz.<\/p>\n<p><b>To set availability and conditions<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"1\">From the\u00a0<b>New Quiz<\/b>\u00a0page, click to expand the\u00a0<b>Availability Dates &amp; Conditions<\/b> drop-down menu.<\/li>\n<li value=\"2\">Customize the following:\n<ul>\n<li><b>Start Date<\/b>: Specify the date when your quiz becomes available to learners.<\/li>\n<li><b>End Date<\/b>: Specify the date when your quiz is no longer available.<\/li>\n<li><b>Add availability dates to Calendar<\/b>: Select the checkbox to add quiz availability dates to your course Calendar. Learners will see the quiz availability dates in their Calendar. Calendar events are generated as the following:\n<ul>\n<li>If the\u00a0<b>Start Date<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>End Date<\/b>\u00a0are set, an End Date event is created.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<b>Start Date<\/b>\u00a0is set, a Start Date event is created.<\/li>\n<li>If the\u00a0<b>End Date<\/b>\u00a0is set, an End Date event is created.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Release Conditions<\/b>: Only allow learners to access the quiz if they meet its release conditions, or requirements. Click\u00a0<b>Add Release Conditions<\/b>\u00a0and then\u00a0<b>Create New<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0<b>Add Existing<\/b>. For example, you can create a release condition that only lets learners view the quiz after they complete a specific module.<\/li>\n<li><b>Special Access<\/b>: Makes the quiz available to select groups of learners or create individualized due dates and customize the timing settings for certain learners.\n<ol>\n<li value=\"1\">Click\u00a0<b>Manage Special Access<\/b>\u00a0to set the conditions.<\/li>\n<li value=\"2\">Select one of the following options:\n<ul>\n<li>Allow selected users special access to this quiz<\/li>\n<li>Allow only users with special access to see this quiz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li value=\"3\">Click\u00a0<b>Add Users to Special Access<\/b>.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embedImage-img importedEmbed-img\" src=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6036482\/uploads\/KQOVVZABDBVL\/f21125-quiz-special-access-add-users.png\" alt=\"The Add Users to Special Access button in the Special Access settings window\" width=\"388\" height=\"246\" \/>Figure: Click the\u00a0<b>Add Users to Special Access<\/b>\u00a0button in the\u00a0<b>Special Access<\/b>\u00a0settings window.<\/li>\n<li value=\"4\">Specify\u00a0<b>Properties<\/b>:\u00a0<b>Due<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Availability Dates<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li value=\"5\">Set one or both of the following\u00a0<b>Timing<\/b>\u00a0options.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Select\u00a0<b>Override time limit<\/b>\u00a0to set a new quiz duration for users with special access. You can choose one of the following options:\n<ul>\n<li>No time limit<\/li>\n<li><b>Set time limit<\/b>. You can change the value only in one of the following fields:\u00a0<b>New Time Limit<\/b>\u00a0(new quiz duration in minutes),\u00a0<b>Multiplier<\/b>\u00a0(how many times more the new limit is than the original one) or\u00a0<b>Extra Time<\/b>\u00a0(additional time in minutes). Values in two other fields are calculated automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<b>Override behaviour when time limit is exceeded<\/b>\u00a0to set new conditions for users with special access after the time limit expires. You can choose one of the following options:\n<ul>\n<li>Automatically submit the quiz attempt<\/li>\n<li>Flag as &#8220;exceeded time limit&#8221; and allow the learner to continue working<\/li>\n<li>Do nothing: the time limit is not enforced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Figure: Set the Timing options in the Special Access settings section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li value=\"6\">Set an\u00a0<b>Attempts<\/b>\u00a0option. If you select\u00a0<b>Override attempts allowed<\/b>, you can select a number of attempts allowed from 1 to 10 and click the\u00a0<b>Apply<\/b>\u00a0button. If a number of attempts from 2 to 10 is applied, you can select optional\u00a0<b>Advanced Attempt Conditions<\/b>. To restrict access to attempts, enter a minimum and maximum percentage (0 &#8211; 100) that needs to be achieved on the previous attempt to qualify for another attempt.<\/li>\n<li value=\"7\">Select users for\u00a0<b>Special Access<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li value=\"8\">Click\u00a0<b>Save<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Password<\/b>: Only learners who enter the password can access the quiz to write it.<\/li>\n<li><b>IP Restrictions<\/b>: Only learners with the IP addresses that you define can access the quiz.<\/li>\n<li value=\"3\">If you have completed customizing your quiz, click\u00a0<b>Save and\u00a0Close<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Availability dates and conditions are saved for your quiz<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 data-id=\"set-up-timing-display\">Set up Timing &amp; Display<\/h2>\n<p>You can create a time limit for your quiz if needed and set up how the quiz displays to learners.<\/p>\n<p><b>To set a time limit<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you do not want to set a time limit, do not select the\u00a0<b>Set time limit<\/b>\u00a0option. To set a time limit and enter the length of time for the quiz, follow the instructions below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"1\">From the\u00a0<b>New Quiz<\/b>\u00a0page, click to expand the\u00a0<b>Timing &amp; Display<\/b>\u00a0drop-down menu.<\/li>\n<li value=\"2\">Select\u00a0<b>Set time limit<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li value=\"3\">In the\u00a0<b>Time Limit<\/b>\u00a0field, specify the length of time for the quiz in minutes.<\/li>\n<li value=\"4\">Click\u00a0<b>Timer Settings<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li value=\"5\">In the\u00a0<b>Timing<\/b>\u00a0dialog, under\u00a0<b>Quiz Start<\/b>, select one of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to set up a quiz that starts and ends at the same time for all learners, select\u00a0<b>Synchronous: Timer starts on the start date<\/b>.<br \/>\n<b>Note:<\/b>\u00a0If no start date and time is set for the synchronous quiz, the\u00a0<b>No Start date set<\/b>\u00a0alert appears under the selected option, and you cannot save the quiz. The\u00a0<b>Due Date<\/b>\u00a0option is disabled for synchronous quizzes.<br \/>\nIf you select the\u00a0<b>Synchronous: Timer starts on the start date<\/b>\u00a0option, do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure the activity is visible in the Calendar (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Check that learners are aware of an upcoming quiz<\/li>\n<li>Provide effective reminders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information about synchronous quizzes and informing learners about upcoming synchronous quizzes refer to:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d2l.vanillacommunities.com\/brightspace\/kb\/articles\/19018-quizzes-faq-hot-tips-and-workarounds\" rel=\"nofollow\">Quizzes FAQ: Hot tips and workarounds<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to set up a quiz with flexibility for learners to take a quiz in their own time, select\u00a0<b>Asynchronous: Timer starts when the learner launches the quiz<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li value=\"6\">In the\u00a0<b>Timing<\/b>\u00a0dialog, under\u00a0<b>When The Time Limit Expires<\/b>, select one of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to automatically submit the quiz when the time limit is exceeded, select\u00a0<b>Automatically submit quiz attempt<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>If you want learners to be able to continue working after the time limit, select\u00a0<b>Flag as time limit exceeded and allow the learner to continue working<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>If you do not want to enforce the time limit, select\u00a0<b>Do nothing: the time limit is not enforced<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li value=\"7\">Click\u00a0<b>OK<\/b>.<br \/>\n<img class=\"embedImage-img importedEmbed-img\" src=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6036482\/uploads\/K92TYN5T6TFT\/f21316.gif\" alt=\"The Timing &amp; Display area expanded in a quiz page with the Timer Settings button and Timing dialog.
