An unlimited number of case files and questions can be added, and all the information is stored on a database and randomly selected.

    In Biological Anthropology a significant focus of basic and applied research is on the study of the gross morphology of human skeletal remains in order to learn about the life of the individual that the remains belong to. 3D imaging technology helps students learn and conduct experiments for the external morphology and habitual activities. The remains at Sheridan are from a 16th- to 18th-century cemetery in the old city of Hall, in the Tyrol region of Austria. The remains are on loan from the State Collection of Anthropology and Palaeoanatomy in Munich, Germany.

    The Human Anatomy project allows students and teachers to interact with a three dimensional human male model. Currently there are Skin, Skeletal and Connective Tissue layers, with plans to add the Organs, Muscles, Nervous System, Circulatory System and Lymphatic System in the near future. Users can view, rotate, zoom and hide the layers, draw directly onto the view port, and read information about landmarks and areas of interest. There are also tools to help students study, such as multiple choice quizzes, drag and drop quizzes and label matching exercises.

    Introduction to Criminology done for the Ontario government’s Shared Online Course Fund. Animated Scenarios: Each Module Overview (M1-M6) begins with an animated scenario in which the same two criminology students discuss key concepts and questions covered in the module. The student "hosts" then identify a location in Canada to travel to with the mission of further exploring a related topic or theory. For example, in Module 1, the student hosts decide to travel to Ottawa in order to visit the Canadian Centre for Criminal Justice Statistics (within Statistics Canada) and learn more about crime statistics in Canada. The student hosts transport themselves using a time-travel conduit which is Sheridan's signature "S". The animations were created by visualization developers, the voice-overs were recorded by students from Sheridan's Performance Theater Program and the scripts were written by the faculty member to provide a narrative thread that carries throughout the course.

    The Curvilinear Hypothesis allows us to graph the levels of happiness in a family over the span of the family life cycle. The graph is curvilinear because the data on the graph curves dramatic over the passage of time. A number of different sociologists have tracked marital happiness across the family life span and reported similar findings. And although there are always going to be variations in the levels of happiness individual couples experience, what we are looking at here is general levels of happiness felt by families.

The purpose of the application was to test the users patience by gradually increasing the length of time it took receive virtual rewards. It was also used as test how well users could orient themselves withing a virtual city. Subjects were placed within different parts of the city, and had to make their way to the goal in a timely fashion. The instructors had their own interface so that they could monitor the subjects as they completed their tasks.

    On September 8, 1863, a man was found washed up on shore on the coast of the Bay of Fundy. Both his legs were amputated above the knees. He was taken in by the local Acadians, who nurtured him back to full health. He spend the remainder of his life in almost complete silence, and therefore, to this day, no one is sure how he ended up on the beach where they found him. The Jerome movie is a recreation of the kitchen from the house where he lived. It gives us a glimpse into his simple life. One of his favorite spots in the house was the shortened stool in front of the stove.

    Vikings was created to supplement the research done at the University of Victoria for www.canadianmysteries.ca. With the assistance of Brigitta Wallace, a renowned Viking expert, we were able to recreate the viking village at L'anse aux Meadows, as it would have looked hundreds of years ago. The village consists of 8 buildings including 3 halls, 4 small buildings, and a furnace hut. Walking around the environment at your own pace, you will be able to look inside the main hall, as well as find 3 vikings interacting with their surroundings. The mystery behind this project is whether or not the site found in Newfoundland is the fabled "Vinland". A secondary mystery is what happened to the Vikings who lived there, as they abandoned their village after only a few years.

    Mississauga Mashup was selected for presentation this July at Changing The Change, a conference focused on best practices of using visualization for social change in Torino, Italy after a peer review by an international committee. VDI adapted a simple 3D social networking application to create an interactive mash-up tool. A mash-up is when people combine media such as still images, videos, text, music, and drawings to create new expressions and stories. The Mississauga Mash Up tool, as it has come to be known, was used at the inaugural Mississauga city summit. Civic leaders and industry leaders used the tool collaboratively to solve problems and create new visions for the future of the city.

    One of the principal responsibilities of a police officer is to protect a crime scene by spotting and protecting physical evidence at a crime scene. This prototype lesson was designed for the Justice Knowledge Network to demonstrate various instructional modes, including tutorials, scenarios, on-line testing and a simulation game, that could be used in police training course. A pre-test provides an advanced organizer to help learners review their knowledge of the subject and preview the course content. It provides immediate feedback after each question. The post-test resembles a traditional exam in that all questions must be answered before the learner submits the exam. Then a final score and feedback on each question is provided. The tutorials include embedded questions and scenarios. Some of the questions are mixed visual and verbal modes. For example, when answering a question asking where the police office should station his or her vehicle at a crime scene, the learner answers by dragging a police car to one of four different locations on a graphic. The simulation game presents a quick photographic tour of an elderly lady's house that may be a crime scene. The police trainee is then tested on his or her recall of details in the scene. This provides the learner with the opportunity to practice an important police skill: making mental notes of a scene that may be used later in an investigation. These materials were produced for the Justice Knowledge Network, a five-year research and development project to develop e-learning for Canadian police forces.

    SAP is a basic refresher-training course that focuses on pursuit regulations and techniques based upon the Ontario Police Service Act's Suspect Apprehension Pursuits Regulation. It provides a review of basic pursuit training, current pursuit regulations and provides an overview of various pursuit situations. The course consists of eight lessons, most of which are presented as tutorials followed by practice quizzes to test the students' understanding of the lesson. Two lessons also contain animated movies that illustrate various techniques officers use to pursue and stop a vehicle. The regulation itself is presented as a missing-word game where students gain or lose points depending on their understanding of the regulation. This is done so as to encourage the students to read the regulation carefully. The course concludes with a final exam that provides students with a self-test of their knowledge. The exam can be repeated as often as desired, each time with some different questions randomly selected from the lesson quizzes. This course was produced for the Justice Knowledge Network, a five-year research and development project to develop e-learning for Canadian police forces.

    AimPoint 3D is a professional golf green visualizer. Using highly accurate and detailed 3D laser scans from the client, VDI is able to translate that data into a real-time 3d environment. This provides the user with an interactive tool for analyzing golf greens. AimPoint 3D also features many detailed graphs and overlays including: contours, slopes, elevation and AimPoint charts. This project was originally created using the Cipher Engine and then later switched to Ogre 3D Engine and CEGUI. All 3D data for the actual green surface was provided by the client using 3D laser scans. The surrounding area, bunkers, and textures were created by VDI using Maya and Photoshop.

    The Ottawa Light Rail Visualization project was created for a Mississauga-based engineering firm to show citizens and politicians what a proposed light rail transit (LRT) system would look like on two of Ottawa's busiest streets. These movies cover over two kilometers of Albert and Slater streets with very accurate depictions of buildings, sidewalks, cars, buses and the proposed LRT. Over 3,200 photographs were taken and rendered into 3D models. The LRT trains, however, were not real because the contract for the system had not yet been granted. Later, the same 3D models were used to create a real-time interactive simulation that lets the users move anywhere to view the LRT from any angle.

    This project is to provide the AECL head office with a simulation of the CANDU 6 nuclear reactor in New Brunswick, Canada. This simulation includes a complete 3D engineering model of the reactor with a mockup of the surrounding area. It also includes a real-time fly-through from the exterior of the plant through the airlock and the containment doors that finishes with a panoramic view of the calandria face in the heart of the complex.

    This series of lessons contains animations and simulations designed to teach police officers how to estimate a vehicle's speed from four different types of skid marks. Each lesson begins with a tutorial and a 3D movie showing a collision and the type of skid mark it produces. A second movie shows how the police officer should measure and record the length of the skid mark. Next, a simulation lets the learner explore the effect of different road conditions by generating skid marks for the learner to measure, record and estimate the vehicle's speed. The final module in each lesson provides police officers with a math tool to apply the appropriate formula to estimate a vehicle's speed from skid marks. These materials were produced for the Justice Knowledge Network, a five-year research and development project to develop e-learning for Canadian police forces.

    VDI worked with McMaster University's Anatomy Department to create a demonstration learning module to support the learning of complex subject matter: the brachial plexus set of nerves originating in the spine that control a person's arms. Experience indicated that students had difficulty understanding the interaction of nerve branches in this area. Still and animated two-dimensional graphics are used to present the different regions and their names. Students can highlight different regions and click on specific ventral rami to see which muscles they innervate. A real-time three-dimensional model of the nerve system lets the student control the level of detail, types of movements and viewpoint. One seasoned anatomy professor expressed "I've never seen the brachial plexus from this point of view. I can zoom in, zoom out and view the movement from any angle!"

    This educational psychology research project was initiated by the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The principal investigator, Dr. Anthony Levinson, with his associate co-investigators, Dr. Geoff Norman and Dr. Amit Garg are investigating how students learn spatial relationships, in particular how the presentation of anatomical images using virtual reality methods and active control of images influences mastery of 3D anatomy. Based on earlier research indicating that students' spatial abilities interacted with different modes of presenting 2D images of human anatomy, the investigators wanted to study the effect of variety of modes of presenting 3D images. Specifically the objectives were: To determine whether study of the Key Views (KV) (superior, inferior, lateral, mid-sagittal) of the brain is as effective as studying Multiple Views (MV). To demonstrate that spatial ability strongly influences learning of 3D anatomy. To determine whether spatial ability interacts with presentation mode (KV or MV) to influence learning. To determine whether active learning (control of movement) (AMV) results in better learning of brain anatomy than passive presentation of the multiple views (PMV). VDI's role in this project was to develop an on-line test of the students' spatial abilities and the four different 3D versions of the human brain.

    This is a 3D anatomy visualization of a frog. It is a web-based online application that demonstrates the capability of web applications for highly complex 3D scene with good rendering quality. It is implemented using Viewpoint Media Player, which is a web browser plug-in that allows dynamic and interactive visualization on the web. The 3D anatomy data of the frog was segmented and generated from a total of 136 slices of 2D images using Visualization Toolkit (VTK). The number of polygons of 3D frog data is about 161,000 in total. Viewpoint offers multi-pass rendering, anti-aliasing and shadow.

    VDI, under contract to GTAA (Greater Toronto Airports Authority), took engineering data of a new road system and parking garage, and turned it into a real-time drive-through simulation. Using a video game engine, the team was able to successfully model and texture all required architecture. The final outcome was a simulation that allowed someone to drive in and around Pearson's not yet constructed 11,000 spot parking garage. An example of the importance of this type of project could be seen during production meetings with the GTAA. During one meeting, a person on the signage committee noticed that there weren't enough road signs indicating how to reach the parking garage. Thanks to this project, they were able to make the necessary adjustments before construction actually began, saving both time and money.
